We get lots of questions about the color Petrol Blue. Our Gruvyer chairs are available in Petrol Blue. The best way we can describe it is as a blue-green color with a splash of grey. That doesn't totally define the color so we looked around to find out what other people think the color is.
It appears that there are some British people that have researched the color name and think it comes from the name for the bird Petrel. I looked up that bird and the they are a big seabird that is dark grey or brown with a white bottom. I am not sure how they think this correlates with the color blue unless they are referring to the water color that the bird flies over.
There are also people who think it comes from the look of spilled oil. I am not sure how they get this idea because in my experience the oil slicks I see are more of a rainbow color. That tells me it is refracting the sunlight to get a broad range of colors. I am sure there is a blue color in there, but there is also almost every other color in an oil spill. That would mean you could have a petrol green, petrol red and petrol blue.
I checked out the Pantone color for Petrol Blue and it is 5415U. Pantone calls it Enamel Blue. That looks a lot like our chair, but I think the chair has a richer color than the flat Pantone sample I looked at. Some people say it is a refreshing, calming, sophisticated or creative shade of blue.
There are people who compare it to teal. Petrol Blue is a bit bluer than teal and has a bit more green to it, I think. Teal is actually just a darker shade of turquoise. You can find this color in the feathers around the eyes of ducks. Turquoise, on the other hand, is a bit more green than teal or Petrol Blue, especially in a darker shade of turquoise.
We see a lot of people ordering the white Gruvyer tables with the Petrol Blue chairs. We offer the tables in a 35.5" x 35.5" table and a 59" x 35.5." table. These are indoor or outdoor tables with covered holes for umbrellas. They make a great combination.
